The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

By studying mathematics, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and their use within the classroom and beyond.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

About Mathematics

Mathematics in Years 7–10 focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems relevant to their further education and everyday lives.

Students develop understanding and fluency in mathematics through inquiry, exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication, and reasoning.

They study Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Within these strands they will cover a range of topic areas including: financial mathematics, algebraic techniques, equations, linear and non-linear relationships, surface area and volume, properties of geometrical figures, trigonometry, data collection and representation, data analysis, and probability.

Stage 6

The Mathematics Stage 6 syllabuses are designed to offer opportunities for students to think mathematically through questioning, communicating, reasoning and reflecting. They promote development of 21st-century knowledge, skills, understanding, values and attitudes and provide challenge. Students generalise, find connections, think critically and creatively, using appropriate technology to support mathematical activity.

We offer the following Stage 6 subjects:

  • Mathematics Standard 1 (non-ATAR)

  • Mathematics Standard 2

  • Mathematics Advanced

  • Mathematics Extension 1

  • Mathematics Extension 2

Homework

All students receive regular homework from their classroom teacher. Homework is an important activity for practicing and reinforcing the skills which are learnt in the classroom. Students also have their own Maths Online accounts which they can access at school and at home. This program provides extra support and is a great tool for preparing for assessments. For more information about homework, please contact your child’s Mathematics teacher.

Tutoring

The Mathematics Faculty offers free tutoring on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. It is a great opportunity to get some extra help, complete homework and prepare for assessment tasks. For more information, please contact your child’s Mathematics teacher.

Assessment Tasks

We believe regular study and revision is important for success in Mathematics. To promote this amongst our students, we allow students to bring a one-page study guide into their assessments in Years 7-10. They are also given access to past examination papers and revision work to help them adequately prepare for these tasks
