Rutherford Technology High School – Maitland Tutorial Centre

Rutherford Technology High School, Maitland Tutorial Centre is an Inclusive Learning Support- Mental Health (ILS-MH) setting providing specialist support for students requiring intensive assistance with social, emotional, and behavioural needs. The centre offers tailored programs to help students develop positive behaviours, improve academic outcomes, and support reintegration into mainstream schools where appropriate.

Positive Behaviour Program

A unique aspect of Maitland Tutorial Centre is our positive behaviour program. Students' behaviour is monitored through a points system, with feedback provided daily. Those who achieve a set point score are eligible to participate in a reward excursion each Wednesday, celebrating their efforts and encouraging ongoing positive choices. This program helps motivate students, fosters engagement, and supports the development of social skills in a supportive environment.

Individual Education and Transition Plans

At Maitland Tutorial Centre, all students develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Transition Plan to support their learning, social development, and future goals. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students additionally develop a Personalised Learning Pathway (PLP) in collaboration with the Aboriginal Learning and Engagement Centre (ALEC).

These plans are created collaboratively with students, families, teaching staff, relevant external agencies, and, where applicable, the ALEC. Student voice is central to this process, helping to shape goals related to learning, social skills, independence, and future education and employment opportunities.

Key Learning Areas

Students at Maitland Tutorial Centre undertake a broad range of subjects designed to support their academic, creative, and vocational development. Core subjects include English, Mathematics, Science, PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education), and HSIE (Human Society and Its Environment).

In addition, Stage 4 students may study Visual Arts, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Music, and Technology. Stage 5 students participate in Work Education—preparing them for future employment and workplace skills—as well as Technological and Applied Studies (TAS).

Students may also have the opportunity to participate in select subjects offered at Rutherford Technology High School. Access to these classes is determined by each student’s readiness and personal progress, in consultation with their support team, and takes into account their interests and individual goals.

Maitland Tutorial Centre students participate in whole school activities such as Athletics Carnivals, Swimming Carnivals, and Cross-Country events, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging within Rutherford Technology High School.
