What is High Potential and Gifted Education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our High Potential and Gifted Education Opportunities

At Rutherford Technology High School, high potential and gifted education is embedded in classrooms, across the school and beyond, ensuring students are challenged, supported and extended at every stage of their learning.

Our students engage with HPGE in the classroom, across our school and through wider NSW opportunities.

In our Classrooms

At Rutherford Technology High School, explicit teaching underpins learning for all students. High potential learners are supported through:

  • Clear learning intentions (WALT) and success criteria (WILF)
  • Modelled examples, guided practice and feedback cycles
  • Differentiation through flexible grouping and curriculum compacting
  • Higher-order questioning and rich, open-ended tasks
  • Extension and challenge embedded within core curriculum programs
  • Opportunities for student voice, choice and independent inquiry

This ensures students who demonstrate advanced understanding are provided with challenge rather than repetition and are supported to deepen their thinking and skills.

Across our School

Rutherford Technology High School recognises that every student is individual. We provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths beyond the classroom.

All students, including high potential and gifted students, are encouraged to take on leadership roles through:

  • Student Representative Council (SRC)
  • Peer mentoring and transition support
  • Student leadership of assemblies, wellbeing initiatives and whole-school events

Opportunities to explore STEM pathways include robotics, coding, engineering challenges and problem-solving activities that develop creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

Students with strengths in the creative arts are extended through drama and dance productions, school performances, visual arts showcases, music ensembles and opportunities to participate behind the scenes in stage, sound and lighting crews.

Students are encouraged to develop strong communication skills through debating, public speaking and creative writing opportunities that strengthen confidence, voice and expression.

HPGE opportunities across the school support students to develop not only academic ability, but also the RTHS PBL values of being Respectful, Responsible and A Learner.

Statewide and External Opportunities

Rutherford Technology High School students are encouraged to participate in a range of statewide and external programs that aim to enrich and extend student potential.

These include:

  • Sporting opportunities including gala days, knockout competitions and progression through zone, regional and state representation
  • Academic competitions such as ICAS and other subject-specific challenges
  • Participation in university outreach and enrichment programs
  • Creative and academic competitions across NSW

Through these experiences, students reflect on their learning, build resilience and develop confidence. Opportunities are designed to extend strengths, support wellbeing and contribute positively to students’ sense of identity and belonging within the RTHS community.
