Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Flexischoools have confirmed their system has experienced major difficulties ove the last few Fridays during peak morning time. Flexischools have been working hard on resolving the issues and are hoping it has now been rectified. As they are unable to determine if issues will occur, or arise again, on a Friday for now they are suggesting a short term measure for Friday orders and that is to ensure you place your order prior to 7:30am on Friday.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Join the graduating class of William Ocean High School as they live through their final senior year - as they experience the fun, the heartbreak, the loves and the loneliness of growing

up .... all set to the biggest hits of the 80's!

Set in the USA, "Back to the 80's" tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School that graduated in the 1980's, as remembered and seen through the eyes of Corey Palmer, who is now 30-something. The then 17-year-old Corey is madly in love with his next-door neighbour, Tiffany Houston, one of the coolest girls in the school. However, she barely notices this, as she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman, the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends are athletic and good-looking - the kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being. However, while they may not be the coolest guys in school, they are still one up on Feargal McFerrin III, whose best friend is his computer, and who believes the crazy notion that one day CD's will replace cassette tapes.

The year commences with Class President Elections: Michael steals Corey's election speech, and when he uses his ideas and promises the girls a kiss for a vote, he becomes President, with Tiffany as his Vice-President. Corey is left looking on despairingly. During the year, several new students arrive at the school - Mel and Kim Easton (the all-singing, all-dancing twin cheerleaders) and Eileen Reagan, whose life becomes a nightmare when Michael and his gang start to send her fake love letters. Will Eileen ever make new friends at William Ocean High School? Will Tiffany ever see the evil side of Michael?

Meanwhile the teachers are having issues of their own. Mr Cocker, after being in a relationship for two years with the apparently conservative English teacher, Miss Sheena Brannigan, confiscates an old edition of Penthouse from a student, only to discover that his girlfriend is the centerfold. How will he cope? Will their relationship be able to survive this hurdle?

Throw in a Star Wars dream sequence, high-energy dance routines, the obligatory 80's party scene, copious amounts of blue eye-shadow, twenty cans of hairspray, as well as some of the most popular songs ever written, and the result is a musical that will delight and amuse an audience of any age.

Old Boys Football Day

On Friday 16^th March Rutherford Technology High School celebrated the memory of ex-student Kallan Egar in stunning fashion with the second annual Old Boys Football Day.

The match itself was viewed by most of the school and spectators were kept on the edge of their seats due to the competitiveness of the game. The Open Boys led the Old Boys 1-0 at half time, however found themselves behind on the score sheet 2-1 win 5 minutes to play. The Opens levelled the scores at 2-2 which sent the match into a penalty shoot-out. Five Year 10 students stepped up against 23 year old men to stay composed and clinically finish all their penalties to win the game 2-2 (5-4 on penalties).

The Egar family handed the Kallan Egar Memorial Cup over to the Open Boys and the Old Boys were left planning their team selections again for next year to try and win the trophy back. The Overall wins now stands a 1-1 which will make next years encounter a must see.

Coles Sports for Schools program is back for 2018 and Rutherford Technology High School has registered!

The program gives schools the opportunity to earn sports equipment just by collecting vouchers from Coles.

How it Works?

For every $10.00 spent at Coles (excluding Coles Insurance products, gift cards, liquor, fuel, tobacco and related products, mobile phone recharge, calling cards, AdBlue and trailer hire), customers will receive one Sports for Schools Voucher. Vouchers can then be brought into the school and every voucher received goes towards our school tally. When the program ends we can exchange our voucher tally towards sporting equipment to encourage students to get healthy and active at school.

Rutherford Technology High School collection box is at the school in the front office and all vouchers must be returned by Friday 11^th May 2018.

The more vouchers we collect, the more equipment we can receive!

NSW Police Legacy Child Safety Handbook

The NSW Government Education & Communities have advised schools that the OnLine Summer 2017/2018 Edition of the "Child Safety Handbook" produced by the NSW Police Legacy is now available for parents and carers.

The resource provides advice to assist children, parents and teachers on a range of areas related to child safety and is updated every six months.

All parents and carers are encouraged to download the latest edition and discuss the safety content with your child/children.

2018 Hunter Sport Trials

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING 2018 HUNTER SPORT TRIALS

We have been advised that the procedure to attend Hunter Sport Trials from next year has changed and students wishing to attend MUST follow the new online procedure or their nominations will not be accepted – student will NOT be able to attend a Hunter Trial with outdated information.

The Hunter Trial Book will NO longer be published and all information relating to trails is on the Hunter School Sport Website: https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/sport/Hunter

Important information:

Students are required to complete the specific sport requirements on the Hunter School Sport Website to be able to trial for a Hunter Team
When students attend trials they must have the Hunter Consent Form signed by school principal or nominated person and parent/caregiver along with all other completed information. If a student arrives at a trial without the Consent Form they will not be able to trial for the Hunter Team and therefore not be eligible for selection.

Information Evening: An information evening will be held on Monday 4 December 2017 for parents/carers that have students who will be in Year 7 next year and we encourage all students and their families to come along, details are:

Rutherford Technology High School hosted the Rutherford Learning Community Group Education Week Ceremony on Wednesday 2 August 2017. Special guests included Principals from our Partner Primary Schools. Captain, Ashley Fry, and Vice-Captain, Sophie Curry, did a wonderful job as MC for the evening, our Hospitality Students under the guidance of Mrs Smailes and Ms Keath were exceptional and the Sound & Lighting Crew under the guidance of Mr Wirth & Ms Walters once again made it all come together! A special thank you to all students that performed at the ceremony.

Rutherford Technology High School is proudly associated with the Rutherford/Telarah Rotary Club with many students active members of their Interact Club.

On Monday 26 June 2017 the Rutherford/Telarah Rotary Club held their annual changeover meeting and Rutherford Technology High School was represented by students and staff.

We are delighted to inform you as part of the night Rutherford Technology High School Year 12 Student, Zoe Fletcher, was presented with her Certificate II in Active Volunteering. Zoe is a member of the Rutherford/Telarah Interact Club who gives up a great deal of her time to assist with a variety of fundraising activities/events and functions.

A very big congratulations to Zoe on her achievement and to all those who represented, and continue to represent, our school with their involvement and association with the Rutherford/Telarah Rotary and/or Interact Club.

School Aerobics Team

This year Rutherford Technology High School has developed a school aerobics team training under the guidance of PDHPE teacher, Mrs Amy Stork, but are looking into appointing a professional coach.

Over a number of weeks the team trained hard to compete in the State School Competition in Sydney on Sunday 18 June 2017 with not only the team members, but, Mrs Stork devoting a great amount of their time in order to be as prepared as they could be.

The exciting news is the ‘Cadets' team were Gold Medallists meaning they have secured entry into the National School Championships to be held at the Gold Coast on Sunday 6 August 2017.

The team has now stepped up their training regime and preparing for their trip to Queensland in early August.

A very big congratulations to the team on their gold medal at the State competition and wishing them the very best for the National competition – Congratulations!!

EOI - AEROSKILLS COURSE 2018

Year 10 & Year 11 Students have been sent an email with an Expression of Interest for studying Aeroskills in 2018.

The course will provide students with the skills to perform repair and overhaul tasks on a limited range of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic aircraft components. The course will be held at Rutherford Aerodrome.

FIRST AID COURSE

Rutherford Technology High School will be running a First Aid Course on Friday 23 June 2017. The course is designed to give participants the skills to apply basic first aid when confronted with illness, injuries or emergency situations. The course is compulsory for HSC Sports Coaching Students but is also an advantage for students seeking employment, traineeships or apprenticeships. Cost is $70.00 which is payable at the front office.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL RESULTS

Our school Athletics Carnival was held on Monday 15 May 2017. Due to the short time from the carnival t the requirement of submitting results for Zone purposes we have only just been able to now provide the results from the day.

Overall House Winner was Tolbar!!

BUS ROUTE DISPLAY SYSTEM CHANGE - EFFECTIVE TERM 2

CDC Hunter Valley Buses have advised schools within their region that as from the first day of Term 2 (26 April 2017)

their bus route display system will change from the

current 3-digit display to a 4-digit display.

This change will be phased in using a rotating display on the front and sides of their buses. The new 4-digit number will display for 2 seconds and then roll over to the old 3-digit bus number for 2 seconds. Students will be able to easily identify their correct bus as it approaches their stop.

This system will be used for all of Term 2, but only the 4-digit numbers will remain after that time.

Puma Football Cup - Open Boys Football

On Friday 31 March 2017 our school Open Boys Football Team met Cessnock in Round 2 of the Puma Football Cup. After a late ground change and a relocation to the synthetic field our boys found themselves down 2-1 with only 20 minutes to go. Cessnock suffered a serious injury and following a 40 minute ambulance delay the game was restarted. With three minutes to go Blake Hamer scored his second goal taking the game into extra time! With two minutes remaining of extra time and the game certain to head to penalties Luke Ryan popped up far stick and slotted the winner to win the game 3-2. Well done to all the boys involved and thank you to School Staff & Parents for their assistance with ground & time changes and support at the game. We are looking forward to Round 3!

We have the Skoolbag App so if you haven't already go to the App Store and download it. The App is fully operational with ALL versions of the App available to download (iPhone/iPad, Android & Windows).

Skoolbag is a school Mobile App that communicates directly with iPhone, iPad, Adnroid and Windows Phone devices. You may or may not be familiar with this App but it is another from that provides schools with an easy way to tell parent/carers everything they need to know, and it provides parents with the most convenient way to receive school notifications. CHANGES TO HSC & NAPLAN IMPACTING YR 9 2017

There are significant changes occurring to the HSC from this year, with the major impact on Year 12 2020 (our current Year 9 students).

One major impact is the attainment of a minimum literacy and numeracy standard to be eligible for the HSC in 2020. This comes into effect with the NAPLAN tests for Year 9 in 2017.

The school is running an information evening to discuss the changes and the impact they will have on our students.

PARENT ONLINE PAYMENTS (POP)

PARENT ONLINE PAYMENTS (POP):

It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone.

The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by selecting "$ Make a Payment"

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance). There is also a category called ‘Other' this to cover items not covered in the previous headings, Other can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice.

When you access the $ Make a Payment you must enter:

the students name, and
class and reference number OR
the students name, and
date of birth

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. There is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number and Invoice number these are not used at our school, please leave blank.

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed.

Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child's account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

Information for HSC Students

The Senior Study Program is offering After School Tuition for YR 12 HSC Students. It is a program to assist students to achieve the best HSC possible so that they can seek entrance to University or TAFE and future career pathways.

Teachers have volunteered for this program.

The Healthy School, Healthy Futures program is a three year health promotion project run by Hunter New England Population Health and The University of Newcastle, and supported by the funding partners , NIB Foundation and NHMRC.

HSHF is led at RTHS by Mrs Louise Smailes who is the liaison point between the school and the research team.

NAPLAN - Information for Parents

In May 2013 the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9 in all government and non-government schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. Each student's level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. The tests will be conducted across Australia for all students from 14 - 16 May 2013.

Early Leavers Policy

Students that need to leave early during the day need to bring a letter from a parent / caregiver and collect an early leavers pass before school or at recess from the Administration Office.

Unscheduled collection of students can be disruptive to classes. Parents will be asked to wait until the end of the lesson for the student to be called to the Front Office.

Mobile Phone Policy

Students are asked to have mobile phones switched OFF during class time and out of sight. Students phones will be confiscated by the teacher if found out during class time.

Parents are asked NOT to contact students on their mobile phone during school hours. In case of emergency, please contact the school directly on 4932 5999.

The school does not accept nor take responsibility for the loss, damage or theft of any device at school or school associated events.

Sick Bay Procedures

Students are asked to follow the correct procedures if unwell or needing to go home.

They must notify class teacher, obtain a yellow note and report to the office to attend Sick Bay.

The front office staff will then contact the caregiver.

STUDENTS ARE NOT TO CONTACT THEIR PARENTS USING THEIR MOBILE PHONE.

Unscheduled collection of students can be disruptive to classes, therefore if student has not followed these steps, the caregiver will be asked to wait until the end of the lesson for the student to be called to the Front Office.

2013 Charter Signing Ceremony

The 2013 Charter Signing Ceremony took place on Wednesday 20 March 2013 when all Year 10 students signed a charter giving a commitment to take responsibility for their future career pathways. This is a formal ceremony that was attended by the Mayor of Maitland, Councillor Peter Blackmore, together with other members of the business community and the parents of the Year 10 students, who also signed the charter to signify their support for the students in their endeavours.

Guest Speaker was Josh Gibson, a former student at the school who was School Captain in 2010. Josh spoke about his life since leaving school, impressing on Year 10 the importance of setting career pathways and working towards them.

Rutherford Student announced as Maitland Young Citizen of the Year

Year 12 Student and 2013 School Captain, Phoebe Ferguson, was announced as the Maitland Young Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day Celebrations held in Maitland Park. Congratulations to Phoebe - a well deserved recognition for her hard work.
